Celebrate African American History Month at Your Natchitoches Parish Library

NATCHITOCHES— The Natchitoches Parish Library will be hosting special movie afternoons all month long to celebrate African American History Month.
Every Wednesday and Thursday afternoons beginning February 1 at 4 p.m. the Natchitoches Parish Library will host an African American Cinema Afternoon.  Wednesday afternoon will feature a biography designed to introduce children to important and prominent figures in the African American community.  Thursday afternoon films will feature popular African American films, such as The Secret Life of Bees, Ruby Bridges, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, and The Help.
The Secret Life of Bees is set in South Carolina in 1964, this is the tale of Lily Owens a 14 year-old girl who is haunted by the memory of her late mother. To escape her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father, Lily flees with Rosaleen, her caregiver and only friend, to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by the intelligent and independent Boatwright sisters, Lily finds solace in their mesmerizing world of beekeeping
Ruby Bridges is an inspiring true story of one little girl whose strength and dignity during the racially charged 1960s helped change history.  When bright six year old Ruby is chosen to be the first African American to integrate her local New Orleans elementary school, she is subjected to the true ugliness of racism for the very first time.
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman is a highly acclaimed drama, based on the epic novel by Ernest J. Gaines.  It eloquently covers the story of the Black Experience – from the Civil War to the civil rights movement – all told from the memories of a fictional 110 year old slaved played by Cicely Tyson.
The Help is a film about an aspiring author who during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African-American maid's point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis.
For more information about this or other programming at the Natchitoches Parish Library, stop by the library at 450 Second St., call Community Outreach Coordinator Amy Walmsley at 357-3280, or visit us online at www.youseemore.com/natchitoches.
