Docent Program to begin in Natchitoches
Downtown historic sites will be available for tour
Participating historic sites in the Natchitoches Historic District will be open to the public for walking tours as part of a docent program that is being implemented by the City of Natchitoches, the Natchitoches Historic District Development Commission (HDDC), and the Cane River Creole National Historic Park.The program will be developed by Carolyn Brackett, Senior Program Associate, Heritage Tourism Program, National Trust for Historic Preservation and will begin during the summer of 2012. A certified tour guide program will be developed for docents who will give the tours.
This program is currently in the initial planning stages. Brackett will be in Natchitoches on March 29, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Natchitoches Arts Center located at 716 Second Street to meet with stakeholders. Details of the meeting will be forthcoming but all interested individuals and partners are invited to attend.
The docent program will be operated through the City of Natchitoches’ Main Street program and funded in part by HDDC. Development of the Docent Program will include but are not limited to the following possible tour sites: the Roque House, the Prudhomme-Rouquier House, the Natchitoches Historic Foundation Office, the Bishop Martin Museum and complex to include Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, and the Lemee House.
