U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (Vicksburg District) will hold a series of public hearings regarding the reduced hours of operation and service at the Lock and Dam System on the Red River. These hearing will be held over a period of several weeks in Alexandria, Natchitoches and Shreveport.
This new mandate will be effective by February 2014. At the time of implementation, Locks 1 & 2 are projected to operate 24 hours a day and Locks 3, 4, & 5 at 20 hours a day. The mandate is based on the number of annual commercial lockages.
hese revised lock schedules have raised concerns about the potential impacts to both recreational and commercial activity on the River. It is possible that reduced efficiencies in the upper pools could be experienced. Recreational use and law enforcement and rescue issues are likely to surface as well.
