Resistance, Escape, Community

Explore the history of organized resistance to enslavement in 19th century North Louisiana and the Deep South. Friday, February 19th will consist of a day-long conference featuring a keynote address by Sylviane A. Diouf, historian and author of Slavery's Exiles: The Story of American Maroons. On Saturday, February 20, conference attendees are invited to participate in an optional excursion to heritage sites associated with the Cane River Insurrection of 1804. This site has been nominated to the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program for national listing and the site tour will include a narrated history of the account presented in Teal's nomination.
