Traditional Vernacular Architecture in Creole Natchitoches/Natchitoches & Cane River

NCPTT, Cane River Creole National Historical Park, and the Cane River National Heritage Area are working with the Louisiana Architecture Foundation and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art – Louisiana Chapter  to present three-and-a-half days of scheduled tours, seminars and social events in the heart of Louisiana’s Cane River Country, with the upcoming "Traditional Vernacular Architecture in Creole Natchitoches/Natchitoches & Cane River" event.

The package tour weekend begins on Thursday, Oct. 31, when registrants check in at the Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site for an orientation and short tour of the landmark. The evening ends with a cocktail reception at the historic Samuel Guy House. Then Friday through Sunday, ticket holders can immerse themselves in the fascinating history and culture of Louisiana’s oldest town, as well as the surrounding area.

On the agenda: Guided tours of Natchitoches’ Historic District; Yucca (Melrose) Plantation, St. Augustine Catholic Church; Badin-Roque House; Oakland Plantation; and Cherokee Plantation.

Some tours will include special talks by historians, academics, architects and craftsmen, who will present on a variety of topics, from Creole landscapes and furniture, to the culture itself.

Guest speakers are: Jeffrey Girard, MA; Cybèle T. Gontar; Eddie Cazayoux, Faia; Dr. Harlan “Mark” Guidry; Patricia Becker, Author: “Cane River Bohemia: Cammie Henry And Her Circle at Melrose Plantation"; Tommy Whitehead, Co-Author: Clementine Hunter: Her Life In Art; Co-Editor: Clementine Hunter: The African House Murals; and Jeff Carbo.

Lodging will be available at the Chateau Saint Denis Hotel in Natchitoches. Transportation will be provided for the Saturday tours only.
