Job Summary

Prepares, measures and administers radiopharmaceuticals for use in diagnostic and therapeutic studies. Performs and assists with nuclear medicine studies. Is responsible for patient safety protocols. Maintains all federal, state, local, and regulatory agency requirements. 

Primary Responsibilities

1. Prepares stock solutions of radiopharmaceuticals and materials; calculates and administers doses under the direct supervision of a Radiologist.

2. Calibrates equipment.

3. Assesses patient’s understanding of exam and informed consent.

4. Performs diagnostic exams on patients as prescribed by physician.

5. Uses scanners or scintillation cameras for detection of radiation emitted to produce image of organ on photographic film.

6. Measures radioactivity using Geiger counters, scalers and scintillation detectors.

7. Follows radiation safety techniques and policies in the use and disposal of radioactive materials.

8. Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric and general population.

9. Assesses, evaluates and informs physician of changes in patient’s condition during testing.

10. Instructs and prepares patient for exams.

11. Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing exams.

12. Understands contraindications and potential hazards of different labs.

13. Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures.

14. Takes calls according to monthly schedule, after regular department hours.

15. Compiles and maintains quality assurance information.

16. Interacts professionally with patient/family.

Competencies

  1. Basic computer knowledge.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of general anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. 
  4. Possesses a high level of knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy.
  5. Ability to use appropriate discretion in handling confidential information and materials.

Supervisory Responsibility

No supervisory responsibility.

Requirements:

Required Education and Experience

1. BS degree required.

2. Graduation from approved school of Radiology Sciences with certification in nuclear medicine. Licensed in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.

3. Certified by the State of Louisiana to practice and administer radiopharmaceuticals.

4. Current CPR certification.
