Northwestern State University (NSU) seeks applications for a Collaborative Pianist in Musical Theatre beginning August 2026. Responsibilities may include providing piano accompaniment for performances, juries, and recitals. The Pianist's primary duties/responsibilities are to serve the NSU Theatre and Dance Department by assisting the Director of the BFA in Musical Theatre as an accompanist for lessons, rehearsals, performances. Duties may also include serving as Assistant Music Director and/or conductor for musical theatre performances. A strong knowledge of the musical theatre canon is required. A strong respect for and an ability to work well with colleagues is essential. 
This is a 9-month staff position without teaching responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Shall be credentialed and in good standing by relative credentialing agencies, if appropriate.
  • Shall be effective playing the assigned subject material.
  • Shall meet the required standards defined by the University.
  • Shall have a minimum of 5 years' experience or equivalent in the practice of area of study, or as required by accreditation agencies.

 

Job Duties and Other Information

 

  • Be committed to excellence in teaching, service, and professional growth and scholarship.
  • Assists the Director of the BFA in Musical Theatre as accompanist for lessons, rehearsals, and performances. Duties may also include serving as Assistant Music Director and/or conductor for musical theatre performances.
  • Utilizes a variety of proven teaching methods appropriate to targeted domain of learning.
  • Work a 40-hour work week.
  • Maintains appropriate expertise and competencies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of school goals and objectives.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with federal laws and program policy.
  • Represents school in professional manner in all activities.
  • Accompanies special event performances with students off campus in the community as well as department events like orientation and additional master classes as needed.
